Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
