NFL Week Five Surprise: Broncos Upset Eagles while Patriots Stun Bills

Football Game

The final pair of undefeated squads in the NFL watched their flawless starts broken during week five as both the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills suffered surprising home defeats.

The Denver Broncos evolved from underdogs to headline-makers thanks to an spectacular comeback victory against the current Super Bowl title holders Philadelphia, before hopping on a flight for this Sunday's overseas contest.

The New England Patriots then traveled to Buffalo and halted the Bills' undefeated start with an impressive victory of their own in their initial primetime game in a full year.

Baltimore's team suffered a third straight loss - their defensive woes could be terminal for their play-off aspirations - while the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, and Detroit celebrated blowout wins on another eventful Sunday.

Broncos Defeat Title Holders

Not only was it defeating the Super Bowl champions, but the manner of their 14-point comeback that made the Broncos' 21-17 victory in Philadelphia such a signature success.

The Eagles had secured 10 contests consecutively, 12 in a row at home and 20 of their last 21 overall before Denver's signal-caller Bo Nix orchestrated two scoring drives in the final five minutes and a last-minute three-pointer.

The Eagles are now 4-1 but there is significant concern about the offence, which sits among one of the worst in the NFL. Receiver DaVonta Smith says they are not "on the same page" with QB Jalen Hurts.

Denver's defence, which sacked Hurts on six occasions, had a lot to do with it, and, together with a genuine franchise quarterback in Nix and top head coach in Sean Payton, they have all the ingredients to launch a legitimate playoff push.

The Broncos meet New York's Jets at Tottenham Stadium on Sunday.

Primetime Patriots Upset Bills

If Denver's win was somewhat anticipated, few predicted New England traveling to Buffalo and beating Josh Allen's Bills, but they accomplished it with huge character.

Their initial national television appearance for Drake Maye produced a star-making showing as he directed a game-winning scoring drive in the final moments to secure victory 23-20.

The young QB was tough and executed the right throws at the right times, many to former Bills receiver Stefon Diggs, who had a big game for their coach's team.

The head coach was anticipated to improve the situation in New England, but a win like this came earlier than most expected.

Patriots Defense

The Patriots defence contained Buffalo's offensive efforts during their surprising road victory.

Ravens Play-off Dreams Dashed?

The season is turning into a nightmare for Baltimore, who were missing a host of defensive stars as they were dominated 44-10 by Houston's team.

It matched their largest loss at home, and dropping to 1-4 for this year means one of the preseason Super Bowl favourites have only a slim chance of reaching the postseason.

The Ravens are now 4-11 playing without star QB Lamar Jackson, who was hurt, but the real issue is an exceptionally poor defensive unit that is the real problem - for a team that have been synonymous with defensive toughness over the years.

The Texans coasted to the win as Baltimore became the first team in the Super Bowl era to concede a minimum of 37 points in four out of five contests. Their season is already over.

Lions, Bucs and Colts Reach 4-1

The Lions' backfield tandem Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery registered six points in the same game for the 14th time - a shared NFL mark - as the Lions defeated Cincinnati 37-24.

Victory made it four wins consecutively for the league's top scorers the Lions, but not one against teams with positive records.

A more surprising 4-1 team are Indianapolis. With their star running back scoring three touchdowns in their 40-6 rout of Las Vegas and signal-caller Daniel Jones appearing as a new man, they will be a tough match for any side.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered the 4-1 club with a thrilling 38-35 win in Seattle in which the sides exchanged nine touchdowns in 10 sparkling drives before the Seahawks cracked first with a final-minute turnover.

Chase McLaughlin booted the game-winner with the last kick of the game for the second time this season. Each of the Bucs' victories have been clinched in the last minute.

Saints and Titans Get Help for First Wins

Given how the New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans began the season, they required assistance to get their first wins, and they got plenty due to several comical errors from the New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals.

After a strong opening from first-year player Jaxson Dart, New York made five turnovers - including one decisively returned for a touchdown - while additionally permitting Rashid Shaheed to find the end zone on an 87-yard reception as the Saints won 26-14.

The Cardinals were more disastrous as they squandered a substantial advantage mainly thanks to two huge blunders.

Initially, Emari Demercado unexplainably fumbled the ball just before reaching the end zone for a long score.

Worse was to come when the Cardinals intercepted Cam Ward near their own goal line, then lost the football across the goal line for Tyler Lockett to score as Tennessee snapped a 10-game slide with a narrow victory.

Seahawks Receiver

The receiver registered one of the most farcical scores we'll see this season.

This left the Jets as the only winless squad remaining in the league after their bruising 37-22 loss by Dallas.

The quarterback became the first player in NFL history to surpass 4,000 passing yards and 1K on the ground in his initial twenty career games as he came back from injury to steer the Washington Commanders to an impressive 27-10 win at Los Angeles.

Rico Dowdle was the standout performer for Carolina with 206 rushing yards in their exciting 27-24 victory over Miami.
