Our team is verifying images and video shared earlier today that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to verify the location from which the images originated relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.

Identifying other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
