Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
