The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry says farewell to a true visionary whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
