The public service broadcaster committed a "major breach" of media regulations by failing to disclose that the voice of a film about Gaza was the offspring of a Hamas representative, as determined by regulatory body Ofcom.
An inquiry by the media regulator into the documentary titled Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has found that the programme was "materially misleading".
The chief executive of the broadcaster had already issued an apology, noting there had been "a significant failing in relation to truthfulness".
The regulator has directed the broadcaster to transmit a prime-time announcement about its decisions.
"Since this amounts to a serious breach of our code, we are directing the corporation to air a announcement of our conclusions against it on BBC2 at 21:00, with a date to be finalised," the regulator stated.
'Possibility to Damage Trust'
The regulator's announcement stated: "Our probe determined that the film's failure to disclose that the presenter's male guardian held a role in the Hamas-controlled government was substantially inaccurate.
"It meant that the public did not have critical information which may have been highly relevant to their judgment of the presenter and the details he provided.
"Confidence is at the core of the bond between a television network and its audience, especially for a national broadcasting corporation such as the British Broadcasting Corporation.
"This error had the risk to erode the significantly high amounts of trust that the public would have put in a BBC factual programme about the conflict in Gaza."
The documentary was removed from iPlayer in February after the presenter's personal associations came to light, and in this past July an broadcaster's internal assessment determined it breached the broadcaster's content policies on accuracy.
A BBC spokesperson said: "The Ofcom ruling is in agreement with the results of the corporation's inquiry, that there was a major oversight in the programme in relation to the BBC's Editorial Guidelines on factual correctness, which corresponds to regulation 2.2 of the regulator's media standards.
"We issued an apology for this and we comply with the authority's determination in its entirety. We will adhere to the sanction as soon as the date and wording are confirmed."
