An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from non-public details of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month rose in the period preceding former President Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A particular user, which joined the platform recently and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that traders estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However these probabilities had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a trade based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other individuals also profited tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule introduced on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from elections to political events.

This sector were examined under the last presidential term. However it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
